Cat Cold Symptoms: Home Remedies to Treat Common Cold in Cats

Like humans, cats can also catch a cold. These felines often suffer colds during warm summer months. The following are cat cold symptoms that owners should be on the lookout for:

  • Coughing
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Wheezing
  • Mucous discharge from mouth and/or nose
  • Red teary eyes or conjunctivitis (discharge from eyes)
  • Cold sore type ulcers around the mouth (possible)
  • Mild lethargy
  • Mild fever
  • Less appetite
  • Heavy breathing or breathing through the mouth

Cat Cold Home Remedies

The following may be used to treat cat colds: Co-amoxiclav, Vitamin C, Vitamin B complex, Biochemical remedies (hepar sulph, ferrum phos, calc phos, etc.) and Afrin Children’s Strength nose drops.

Cats with colds may also be treated with various home remedies such as the use of a cool mist vaporizer. It is also advised to humidify the room to allow cat to breathe easier. Another remedy is to feed the feline with chicken broth. The use of licorice and antiviral herbs (elderberry, etc.) could also be a great help to the cat’s fast recovery.

How to Treat a Cat Cold

The following can be done to hasten healing of the sick feline:

  • Encourage cat to eat – canned food is preferable as this contains the essential nutrients plus water that the cat needs to become well again
  • Keep cat dehydrated
  • Keep cat away from draft
  • Wipe discharges – from eyes, nose, or mouth
  • Give cats any of the cold remedies mentioned above
  • If condition worsens or persists for more than 10 days, bring the cat to a vet
  • Keep the sick cat away from other cats to prevent spread of infection
