Overview on Dog Neutering

  • Dog neutering is the process of taking away the animal’s reproductive organ, either just a part or the whole of it.
  • This process is medically called orchectomy which is a surgical procedure done to sterilize dogs.
  • Dog neutering is performed to:
    • Minimize the dog’s aggressive behavior
    • Reduce roaming
    • Prevent prostate conditions in dogs
    • Prevent female dogs from getting pregnant
  • General anesthesia is given to the dog prior to the procedure. The dog lies on its back while the scrotal part is disinfected. The process involves a small cut between the penis foreskin and the scrotal sac.
The testicles are then removed carefully without involving the surrounding blood vessels.
  • The general benefit of neutering is to improve their behavior and overall health.

Neutering Male Dogs

The following are some benefits of neutering male dogs:

  • Enhances concentration – Significant increase in concentration is observed among dogs after having neutered. This allows them to be trained easily.
  • Decreases aggression – Aggressive dogs become calmer and gentler after the neutering surgery. They can be easily handled and adopt better urinating and hygiene habits.
  • Minimizes occurrence of hernia – Hernia is a protrusion of certain organs which leads to painful condition in dogs. Dog neutering lessens their risk to form hernia.
  • Lesser risk of testicular tumors – Some types of tumors can be stimulated by the hormone testosterone. Neutered dogs will no longer be susceptible to such conditions since their testicles are removed.
  • Reduces prostate conditions – Studies show that around 80 percent of unneutered dogs are more prone of acquiring prostate problems. By neutering dogs, symptoms of prostate diseases are eradicated.

Dog Neutering Recovery

It takes around 18 hours to a day for a dog to recover after the neutering procedure.

The common symptoms following these are lack to balance, appetite loss, vomiting, nausea, lethargy and grogginess. Therefore, pet owners need to help in the fast recovery of the dog. Here are some tips:

  • Allow the dog to have enough rest and sleep. Provide a comfortable bed.
  • Since there are lots of fluids retained in the body post-surgery, let the dog empty its bladder often.
  • Do not allow other pets to come in contact with the neutered dog because of its disoriented condition.
  • Clean the wound regularly with antiseptic solution. Also, check it often for any signs of possible infection.
  • To allow fast recovery, do not let the dog do heavy activities.
