Like people, dogs are also prone to contracting bacteria and developing infections. Often, they live off on the nutrients and habitats provided by more complex organisms such as plants, animals, and people.

  • There is such a thing as “good bacteria” or the “normal flora” in the body. However, an imbalance in the normal flora or the introduction of “bad bacteria” causes the infections.
  • Bacterial infections can affect different parts of the dog’s body.

Bacterial Infections in Dogs Ears

  • Bacteria can cause infections in the ears of dogs.
  • These infections could be localized at the inner, middle, or outer ear but could also affect all the parts of the ear.
  • This infection is very common in dogs with floppy or furry ears that restrict air circulation so that moisture easily accumulates.

Signs of Bacterial Infections in Dogs

  • Signs of bacterial infections include:

o    Itchiness of the affected area

o    Redness or swelling

o    Pus or bloody discharge

o    Abscesses on the skin

o    Lack of appetite

o    Lethargy and weakness.

Treatment for Bacterial Infections in Dogs

  • It is very important to treat bacterial infections as soon as possible to ensure that dog does not suffer from complications.
  • It is also important to try to identify the bacteria causing the ailment as medications are specially designed for certain types of bacteria.
  • Treatment will involve:

o    Anti-inflammatory medications

o    Antibiotics

o    Home remedies.
