Shedding fur is a normal occurrence in a canine’s life. Bald spots on dogs, however, require special attention. If the owner notices a bald patch on the dog’s skin, getting immediate veterinary care is the proper course of action.

What Causes Bald Spots on Dogs Head?

Dog owners must be aware of the following probable causes of bald spots.

  • Pollen in the environment can oftentimes result to allergies, which may lead to hair loss and open wounds. Parasites like flea, ringworms and mites can be allergens as well.
Mites can infest through condition called mange.
  • When the dog has been receiving medication like steroids or cortisols, overdosage is likely to cause balding. If other symptoms appear like enlarged abdomen and frequent drinking or urination, it may be Cushing’s syndrome. Dog breeds with dense coats are often clipped to control their hair growth. After clipping, bald spots may occur persistently.
  • Foreign objects lodged in the dog’s skin can cause bald spots because the dog continually attempts to remove it through repeated licking and biting.
  • Calluses, as well as bald spots, may form on the elbows as a result from too much contact on hard surfaces.
  • Rashes or hives caused by insect bites, chemicals in cleaning agents and plants can develop into bald spots.
  • Genetics may play a role in bald spots as well.
Among all the dog breeds, Chihuahuas, dachshunds and whippets are more prone to hair loss, especially after they turn one year old.

Bald Spots on Dogs Treatment

  • When persistence of bald spots is detected, make an appointment with the veterinarian who can examine the dog’s affected areas.
  • Hair loss caused by non-parasitic infection means there might be hormonal imbalance. Vitamin intake and restructuring the dog’s diet is prescribed by doctor. Do not self-medicate or administer supplements without guidance of a medical practitioner.
  • The doctor is likely to prescribe vitamins A and E to correct hormonal imbalance as well.
  • To stop inflammation, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial medicines can prevent the condition from taking a turn for the worse.
  • Skin conditions like eczema or mange can be treated with sulfuric baths and anti-itch creams, which the veterinarian can recommend.
  • Oral medications, anti-fungal shampoo and iodine application are commonly used for treatment of ringworm that caused the bald spots.
  • Recheck the dog’s diet to see if there are possible allergens in the food it regularly consumes. The doctor can advise a new eating pattern or diet as treatment.
