Dog Leg Injuries

  • Leg injuries happen especially with very energetic dogs who love to jump and run wildly around the area.
  • Recognizing leg injuries and treating them immediately will help prevent more serious injuries.

Small Dog Leg Injuries

  • Although small dogs often have legs that are proportionate to their height, they sometimes miscalculate heights. Injuries happen when they try jumping from a high area such as a tall chair unto the ground.
  • Of course, injuries also happen when the leg is hit by an object or another animal.

Diagnosing Dog Leg Injuries

  • It is often very easy to diagnose leg injuries as the dog will walk limping, with the affected leg raised close to its body as he moves.
  • Check the leg for open wounds or bruises.
  • Evaluate all the symptoms. Does the dog howl in pain when the part is touched? Take not of those things to tell the vet later on.
  • Never assume that the leg is not broken when there is no open wound. Do not try to stretch the leg, especially when the dog growls or snarls.
  • Remember, an injured dog can become aggressive so make sure that the dog allows the examination else you will be bitten in the process.

How to Treat Dog Leg Injuries

  • Treatment depends on what had happened and the extent of injuries.
  • For sprains, application of cold then hot packs could help.
  • For fractures, it is best to bring the dog to the vet immediately.
  • Do not attempt to restore to dislodged bone to its proper place. Let the vet do that.
  • Give the dog medication for pain.
  • The vet may prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents, and other medication.
