Gill Flukes is a parasite. It has the ability to feed off a lone host in its entire life cycle. One end of the parasite’s body is shaped like a hook, allowing it to hold onto their host for a long time.

Gill Flukes Symptoms

  • Most noticeable symptoms observed among infested fishes are reddening or inflammation of the gills.
  • The gills can also pus or mucus.
  • The fish has a tendency to swim to the surface of the water, gasping for air.
  • Fish can show signs of difficulty in breathing.
  • Clamped fins while at rest
  • Rapid movement

Gill Flukes Treatment

  • Salt bath can treat gill flukes and is effective for individual fish.
    1. Bacteria and pathogens don’t survive in salt solutions.
    2. To treat an infested fish, immerse it in the salt solution for 2-3 days.
  • Formalin and malachite green is another powerful treatment for gill flukes.
    1. Clean the fish tank first before the treatment. Read toxoplasmosis in cats
    2. Products with a combination of malachite green and formalin should be used accordingly, with the right amount or dosage.
    3. Treatment period can last up to three weeks.
  • Pesticides with organophosphates are used for severe levels of infestation.

a.    The veterinarian can prescribe a type of pesticide that is appropriate for stopping the spread of viruses in fish diseases.

  • Bettas and goldfish stricken with gill flukes have a high mortality rate as a result of the infection.
  • Gill flukes need to be detected immediately so that it can be easily controlled, avoiding infestation of the other fishes in the aquarium.
