Flowerhorn fish are popular pets among aquarium enthusiasts. This species is believed to bring fortune and good luck to its owners. These can also be quite expensive; thus, if the flowerhorn is sick, it is best to provide treatment quickly to save it from dying.

The following are just some of the diseases that flowerhorn fish could have:

  • Ich or Ichthyophithirius multifilis. This ailment causes the fish to have small white spots all over its body. These spots often have the same size.
    This caused by a protozoan parasite.
  • Hole in the head. This ailment causes the fish to have small holes in the head. These holes gradually become larger. This ailment is fatal.
  • Pop eye. This is characterized by an unnatural bulging of the eyes. It is caused by a number of factors but could be bacterial in origin.
  • Dropsy. This is caused by a number of factors and is distinct in that fish with this ailment will look like an open pine cone. The scales on their body will protrude and become hard.
  • Bladder disease. This could sometimes affect the fish and is one of the main causes of fish swimming sideways.
  • Fin and tail rot diseases. These diseases are caused by bacteria. The tail and fins of the fish will be frayed.
  • Velvet disease. This disease causes cloudiness or a rusty color unto the fish’s body.
  • Flukes and other parasites. The flukes could live at the fish’s gills while the parasites can live inside the digestive system and other parts of the body.

Flowerhorn Fish Care

  • The temperature should be moderate and the fish should not be subjected to extreme changes in temperature and light.
  • Always keep the tank clean to discourage the growth of disease causing microorganisms.
