Cats and kittens often experience digestive problems such as vomiting and diarrhea. Unlike in humans, the consequences of diarrhea in cats are usually life-threatening.
Bouts of diarrhea in felines are usually rare, as cats can become very discriminating in their diet. Diarrhea then is usually the consequence of fast eating or slowed digestion, wherein foods remain undigested.
A little tweak in the cat’s diet can help bring digestion and bowel elimination back to ace conditions. Pet owners must keep in mind that if diarrhea becomes either severe or persistent, it is best to seek veterinary attention.
Bland Diet for Cats with Diarrhea
The best diet for cats with diarrhea is a bland diet. This type of diet does not have spices or any strong flavors. Usually, added ingredients such as spices and sugars irritate the mucosal walls, which lead to fast mobilization of fecal material, leading to diarrhea. Other equally significant gastrointestinal problems require the use of bland diet as therapy.
Pet owners may have to modify the pet’s diet for a few days or more, depending on the cat’s recovery. A bland diet can give the stomach an adequate res period. Cats that are being treated for diarrhea must still be offered with the normal servings of food, but these must be divided into five small feedings spread throughout the day at equal intervals. Although cats generally need more water because of potential dehydration, the pet owner must wait at least 4 hours before giving the pet the fluid it needs. If the pet has tolerated the small amount of water, around ¼ of the normal diet size of bland food may be given.
Some bland diet examples include making the following:
- Around 1 ½ cup of cooked potato or white rice should be mixed with ½ cup cottage cheese.
- Rice with plain boiled turkey or chicken meat. The viand must have no seasoning of any kind.
- Chicken broth or any unseasoned soup with rice.
- Baby food
- Mix 1 cup of chopped, boiled chicken, ¼ cup of steamed broccoli, ¼ cup of shredded carrots, and chicken broth in one pan. Add this mixture to white rice, and serve to the pet.
