What Causes Fatty Tumors (Lipoma) in Labradors

It is common for fatty tumors in Labrador Retrievers to show up in older dogs as a normal part of the aging process.
Overweight dogs have a higher risk of developing these fatty tumors under the skin.
The presence of these lipomas is usually non threatening to your pet.

Fatty tumors are painless and movable.
Generally if the fatty tumor is movable, it is benign. Fixed tumors that have grown a root system can develop into medical issues.

It is advised to get all fatty tumors assessed initially by a professional. After that, it is important to be observant of any increase in size, drainage or bleeding at the site, or signs of pain in your dog.
It is not standard procedure to remove all lipomas. Removal is only necessary if the benign growth is in an area that causes your dog discomfort or limits his mobility.
Areas like the armpits, groin, or near a joint may be sites where the vet may recommend removal for the dogs comfort.
